I stated during the federal election that the worst thing that could happen to the NDP would be for them to actually win power.
They were surging in the polls and some of my left wing friends were really hoping they would pull off a complete miracle.
I warned them that it would be the most dreadful outcome for the party because the NDP wasn’t anywhere near ready to govern. Had they won power, the party would have been obliterated in the following election. Probably finished forever.
Now, they have four years to groom the party, weed out the wackos and update their constitution.
I’ve attached in the title a link to an article today outlining Ruth Ellen Brosseau’s first visit to her new riding. She can barely even speak French so the NDP’s deputy leader had to go with her to act as translator.
She’s been getting all the publicity but she’s pretty much par-for-the-course for the NDP in Quebec. Had they won power, Layton would have had to form a cabinet drawn from MPs of this calibre.
The Harper majority is the best thing to happen to the NDP. They have four years to organize without fear of an election and they have Harper as a foil.
I realize the hardcore NDP supporters can’t stand even looking at the Prime Minister but they should be thankful he won the election with a majority.
Their party actually has a chance now.
